Keha Kamath

🇮🇳

My work lives at the intersection of memory and identity, where mixed media becomes a language for stories that don't fit into a single medium. I paint people, not just faces: the roots they carry, the cultures that shaped them, the quiet dignity in everyday moments. As a young artist just beginning this journey, I see every piece as both a discovery and a declaration, proof that art doesn't wait for permission to matter.

I believe portraiture is an act of honoring. Every layer I build, acrylic grounding the piece in boldness, oil softening it into depth, charcoal grounding the raw and unfinished, gold leaf marking what deserves reverence, is a way of saying this person, this heritage, this moment is worth preserving. Mixed media lets me hold contradiction the way real identity does: rough and refined, ancestral and modern, fragile and unshakeable, all in the same frame.
I'm not interested in painting people as they're expected to look. I'm interested in painting them as they are, layered, cultural, luminous, and complex, using materials that let me build texture the way life builds texture: piece by piece, without smoothing over the seams.

🇮🇳

-
This piece captures a Turkish dervish mid-sema, the sacred whirling ceremony of Sufi mysticism, a practice where the body becomes a bridge between the earthly and the divine. The title holds the piece's real tension: gold and ash, glory and grounding, transcendence and mortality, held in the same figure at the same moment.
Concept & Materials
The base is built in acrylic, bold, fast strokes that carry the speed and blur of the turn itself. Oil paint softens the folds of the tennure (the long white skirt), slowing the motion into something meditative, almost suspended despite the implied spin. Charcoal, the ash of the title, grounds the piece in the shadows of the face, hands, and the folds closest to the body, keeping the figure human and weighted rather than purely symbolic.
Gold streaks, the piece's gold, appears only where it matters: along the hem as the skirt flares outward, and in fragments near the sikke (the tall felt hat), as if divine light only catches the fabric at its fastest, most surrendered point. The gold isn't a crown. It's a glimpse, earned through motion, not given freely.
Why this subject
I wanted to paint the dervish as a person mid-devotion, not as a decorative or purely aesthetic symbol, something spiritual imagery often gets reduced to. Ash reminds the viewer that this is a mortal body in ritual; gold reminds them that something beyond the body is being reached for. Neither wins. That's the whole point.

Materials used
Acrylic on canvas

Artwork size
70x50 cm
